First Day of School!

Today has been pretty amazing. I'm so excited about my classes and all that I'm going to learn for my masters degree!

My first class on Mondays is "Dance as a Socio-Cultural Practice." My professor is Andree Grau and she is awesome! She had my attention from 9:30am-1:00pm... can you believe that? There is so much to learn about dance and its place in culture. I love, love, love this class!

My afternoon class is "Looking at Dance" with Stephanie Jordan and it is going to be amazing as well. We studied the ballet Les Noces today and it was really fascinating because we took an interdisciplinary approach to analyze and understand the dance. I will be doing dance analysis in this class with a philosophical as well as anthropological approach. We even learned some of the choreography of the the ballet! Very exciting!

I know I am such a nerd, but I feel so happy that classes have started and can't wait to dive into all the reading! It's going to be really hard work but I'm so excited about all that I get to learn here. Dance Anthropology truly is my "dream masters program" and I can't believe this dream is a reality! Wow... I'm so blessed.

Hooray for telephone booths...

So today I went shopping at ASDA, a store in London that is pretty much the equivalent to WalMart. I decided that I need to get a few things to spice up my room so it doesn't feel like such a prison cell (pics to come shortly). While I was waiting for the 265 bus it started to rain - actually pour. As I went to flag down the bus I guess he didn't see me cuz the 72 bus was in the way and the blasted thing didn't stop!!! The bus to ASDA comes every 10-12 minutes so I had to take cover and found safe haven in one of these:

Granted, the phone booth I was in wasn't as nice as these two, but it was sufficient. Now that I think about it, I wasn't even grossed out by being in the phone booth and by the many germs that were probably floating around in it! Ha! See, I'm overcoming the germaphobia already! Thank you London!

Central London Photo Frenzy!

So the university has been putting on activities all week for the international students. Today was the "photo frenzy" in central london.... my first time there!!! It was really exciting. They made it like a scavenger hunt where they put us in groups of 6 and we had to answer 20 questions that were clues to the tourists spots, and then we had to take a picture with a disposable camera. We had to do it as quickly as possilbe because it was a race. Let me tell you... being the competative person that I am, I was all gung-ho at the beginning but it was soooo exhausting!!! By the end of it I was like - I don't even care anymore, just get me back to my flat so I can sit on my boutross! My legs are killing me now because we saw all 20 different places and were walking around from 9:30am-3:30pm non-stop. Needless to say, I'm pooped. Here are some pics from the event though. It really was fun.

This is me with one of my flatmates, Kat. She is from Philly and is also getting her MA in Dance Anthro! There are 5 of us - three from the states, one from Denmark, and another from Greece. This is a pic of me on the tube for the first time! Brought back a lot of metro memories in Paris...

It was a busy day with tourists everyone. Big Ben!

Buckingham Palace

The largest pelican I've ever seen just chilling in St. James Park!

A statue of Eros that we had to find and take a pic by for the frenzy. Rad is on my left from Serbia and Andy, Stephen, and Justin are on my right from Biola University in LA. They are just in London for a study abroad and I was pretty excited to meet them because Biola is a Christian school where they have a similar honor code to BYU. Cool!

These are just a few of the pics because most of the ones we took were on the disposable camera we had to use for the activity. There is so much to see and do! I'm so excited to explore this magnificent city!!!

Journey to London

Well, I can hardly believe it myself but I am in London!!! It has been quite the adventure so far, so I'm going to do my best to update you. I'll start with the evening before I left...
Hannah, Holly, and Michelle came to visit me from Provo my last night in the states. These girls have been my best friends this summer and I honestly don't know what I would have done without them. We went for my last meal at Cafe Rio, then came back to my house for cheesecake and reminiscing about the good ol' summer days. Up until this point we were doing really well but it was the group hug before the last goodbye when Holly started crying and then we all cried. Ooohhh how I love and will miss the "core 4" of summer 2008!

Tree came over after that to keep me company while packing and spend the last night with me. Finally it was the day of and I was totally bawling and freaking out... NOT WANTING TO GO AT ALL. I finally chilled out and got everything ready. Selena took me to the airport and saying goodbye to her and the kids was an absolute disaster. Once again... bawling.
The plane ride from Salt Lake to Chicago wasn't bad, but it does involve a funny story. Question - how do you feel about people who talk to you on the plane? I've never really had a problem with it because I enjoy meeting new people, but I also try not to initiate it too much because I don't want to be annoying or whatever. I'm also not a fan of annoying people who talk too much. Well, my next question is this - if you do talk to the person sitting next to you, how much is too much? And when are you divulging too much info? Example... the girl next to me was a really pretty girl from Brazil. We chatted for a bit and then all of a sudden she was touching her boobs saying that they hurt and told me she just got a boob job that morning... Ummm... can we say too much info??? She literally had just come from getting the plastic surgery. Poor planning if you ask me. Anyway... haha. Kindof funny really.

Landed in Chicago at 5pm and my flight had boarded for London at 4:55pm. Needless to say I was freaking a bit because I still had to find the gate where my plane was departing and Chicago is HUGE! Not to mention that I had my heinous carry-on with all 40 of my books (30 pounds) for this semester in it. And get this... NO WHEELS! I wanted to kill myself! Seriously, I was sweating and it hurt so bad. I'm still sore. Anyway, everyone was all boarded and here I was running around the airport sweating and praying that I wouldn't miss my flight. Ugh! No worries though, cuz I made it!

The flight to London wasn't bad at all, and I didn't even sleep for most of it! I wrote 10 pages in my journal while listening to music and then watched the edited version of the Sex and the City movie. I was sitting in an aisle seat with no one next to me and a really nice Ukrainian woman with a very thick Russian accent in the seat next to that. She was so great and was so excited about Sex and the City. She kept on pointing to the screen saying "Sex ;lakdf;lkadflj!" "Sex a;lfdj;lakjdf;l!" (I couldn't understand her at all... She was trying to speak english but it wasn't working very well) Anyway, the movie was surprisingly good and I was amazed at how much the 4 women remind me of the "core 4!" Here is a pic and this is who I think is who (I don't know names cuz I'm not really a Sex and the City watcher).
I am the one on the left. She is a total germaphobe about everything. Hannah is absolutely Sarah Jessica Parker. Gorgeous, sweet, and totally into fashion. Michelle is next because she is the brilliant one, and Holly is the one on the right because she does PR, is rich, successful, and loves men. Anyway... random tangent...
Back to London and arriving at the University...

I finally arrived and felt like HE-double. So, so tired. Thankfully people from the University were there to greet me holding little Roehampton U signs, and I got to meet some of the other international students. We took a bus ride to the University and checked into our accommodation. Ummm... this is where the depression set in because I was horrified by the state of my room. Call me a spoiled brat but it reminded me of the nasty hostels I stayed in while traveling around France and Belgium and I was totally grossed out. I think I have a problem... but London will be just the thing to help me get over that.

This is becoming quite the novel and I'm probably boring you to death! I think my blog has become my journal... kindof disturbing since everyone can read it but whatever...
So my first couple of nights haven't been that bad, but I still feel so tired. Yesterday was a bit of an adventure because I took the bus for the first time and went to ASDA - a supermarket that is pretty much the equivalent of Walmart. I took one of my empty rolling suitcases so I could shove all my crap in for the bus ride back. There were other students there who thought I was pretty crazy with my rolling luggage, but they were jealous of me in the end. Haha.

Last night was fun too - my first party experience in London. It was just at the flat of this guy my flatmate met from Serbia named Rad. There were a bunch of people there and everyone was so nice. It's amazing to be meeting people from so many different countries. I'm surprised by how many people there are from Greece and Cyprus! I'm going to have friends from all over the world! Amazing!
Today has been pretty low key with an information fair all morning. Tonight should be interesting with a dance and possibly going out on the town... We'll see.

Well that's a pretty brief update, but I will do better about making my posts smaller and more frequent. Here are a few pics of the University! This is the Grove House right in Froebel right by where I live. There are beautiful parts of campus... very historical... and other parts that aren't so beautiful... =)

I guess this building was in the film Pride and Prejudice... it is beautiful. Here are more pics from my walk through campus...

Fountain in front of Grove House...

There is a really big lake on campus and this is a pic I took while walking along the path that I will take to class everyday. Beautiful, eh?

More pics to come everyone! I love you all and will keep you posted! xox

A Tribute to Summer

I have to admit, I was extremely skeptical about this summer. Things ended up being a lot different then I expected, but I can honestly say that this has been one of the most memorable summers ever! Here are some of the highlights...

Fort Lauderdale, FLORIDA

I went on a trip to Florida with my brother Jon to visit his mission. We had so much fun staying in an amazing hotel right on the beach, hanging out with his mission president, visiting Haitians and eating Haitian food, and shopping of course!

Oakland, CALIFORNIA
I had the opportunity to visit my mission for the first time! It was one of the most INCREDIBLE trips of my life. I was able to see so many people that I love and have missed since returning home. The biggest highlight of the trip was definitely attending the sealing of Ben and Robyn Morgan. One of the happiest days of my life!

Can you tell how happy I am?

Provo, UTAH

Who would've thought Provo could be so fun? Well, we made it fun with dance parties and movies on the grass! Ohhh the UAC...

My 24th Birthday

My favorite girls this summer - Holly, Hannah, and Michelle (with Rachael mia but there in spirit) threw me a little birthday party and Holly baked me a delicious cake!

GOLFING

I went golfing for the first time ever! I always thought it was a boring game for old people... well, now that I'm 24 I guess that makes me qualified! Hahaha. Seriously though, I had so much fun! This is an actual shot of me after a hit! Not a pose!

So, those are just a few of the highlights, but I really had a blast this summer and met some incredible people. I love you all and am going to miss you in London! xox

24 & single: hot or not? i think HOT!

One of my dearest friends just turned 24 today... a rough age for some women who are single and would rather not be. From what I keep hearing the problem is this: the guys who are our age or older don't want to date us. Is this true? This particular birthday girl (who might I add is very beautiful) happened to be driving in a car with one of these "elect guys" who said this - and this is a direct quote-
"the younger ones stay hotter longer"
Which brings me to my question- Is 24 and single hot or not? I'm sorry but seriously?! How could someone say something so shallow! Maybe the 18 year-old girls are hotter with their teenage bodies, but we've got something on them: life experience and wisdom. Perhaps I'm bias because I just turned 24 a couple weeks ago, but I think 24 is hot and I am so excited about this year!

To Blog or Not to Blog???

This has been the big question in my mind... a difficult decision indeed. With the help and example of the beautiful Holly Lynn I have concluded that it's for the best. I am down to my one week countdown until I move to London, England and this is a perfect way to keep everyone posted on my adventures.

Hope you enjoy and LOVE you all! xox
